酒巻秀明氏は、他にも誤記を指摘してくださったのですが、とりあえずクールポコな「やっちまったなぁ」系のネタを昨日紹介したわけです。しかし、さらにやっちまったなぁ、が判明しました。問題は、教会のお手伝いをする少年“altar boy”のことで、修士論文の時にさんざん大きな辞書で調べ、ぴったりのものがなかったので類推で語釈をつけたため、かっこ書きで英語をつけたのである。どんなもんだいというカンジで、威風堂々の歌舞伎まくりの図である。
ところがである。↑上の本では、“alter boy”になっている。これは原稿執筆時にも実は気にはなっていた。さすがに、多少なりともフロイトやパーソンズを読んでいれば、おかしいなと思うのがふつうである。で、不安に思ったので、ググったのがいけなかった。「現代語の辞書」だとかゆう、今考えればあやしげなサイトにそうあった。しかも、ニューズウィークの記事もヒットしたので、原資料にあたらなかった。実は、原資料は修士時代コロンビア大学から取りよせた自慢のもので、共著者にも「貸してやるぜ」みたいにしたり顔でコピーしてあげたものなのだ。ところが、部屋の整理が悪く、執筆当時紛失状態にあった。すぐに共著者に問い合わせるべきだったのだが、しなかった。自分のメモには、鬼のような自信があったことになる。
原資料は後で共著者に再コピーしてもらった。今回みてみたら、ギラム（R.Gillam 実はこれもギラムでいいかずっとわけわかめだ）は別にひねったわけではなく、ふつうに“altar boy”と書いてあった。ミルズペーパーズの一次資料にも同様の記載があったはずである。しかし、今になってみると、ニューズウィークの記事と写真のなんて皮肉なことだろう。ｗ

The spelling error (since corrected) is perhaps the only truthful thing in this article by Howard Fineman (March 10,2003) which proclaims that the Bush presidency is "the most resolutely faith-based" in modern times, "an enterprise founded, supported and guided by trust in the temporal and spiritual power of God."

Boris Savinkov once explained how difficult it was to get a real Christian to kill.
Savinkov was the leader of a Bolshevik terror squad responsible for the deaths of dozens of high Tsarist officials. When he tried to make a bomb-throwing terrorist out of former Tsarist officers he found they had courage and fanaticism but were restrained by something else.

But George Bush is no Christian. Never was. He is an illustration of how the Illuminati assume the mantle of Christianity to disguise their diabolical intentions and discredit God. Iraq is about oil, Zionism and world tyranny. Bush's pious drivel and Newsweek's revolting hosannas fool no one.

最後の一行なんて痺れますね。ｗ おりしも、John H.Summersという歴史学者がミルズの論集を出していて、「ミルズの伝記書で参照に値するものはいまだない」とまで言い切っている。最後のほうでは、どんな大きな本や、何巻本もの論集よりも、これらの論文は読むに値する、と言い切り、そのなかにここ数年に自分が書いた論文の他、ギラムの論文などがあげられている。社会学者が書いたものは、ホロヴィッツの大著もすべて価値がないと言いきっている。これは、政治史専攻のギラムが先鞭をつけ、その後主に現代史の分野でミルズの史料研究がすすんでいることへの歴史家としての自負なのだろうと思う。あるいは、社会学者がいい加減な史料研究を発表して、いい気になっていることへの反発もあるのかも知れない。
ちなみに、酒巻氏は、ドイツ革命の史料研究で名高い良知力門下だった人である。シビアな薫陶を受けた人には、笑ってすませることではないことはよくわかる。良知の師匠の大塚金之助は、資本論研究で、初版を参照していないと、修論を落とした怖い人なのだ。あえて恥をさらして、教訓とするとともに、買って下さった方への懺悔としたいが、その値打ちがないと言われれば、黙って頭を下げるしかない。
私は、けっしてぼけたわけではなく、昔からミスは多いのだ。これはずさんな性格からくるもので、かなり改善されつつあるが、またやっちまったというかんじである。そして、おそろしいことには、もしかすると修論も誤記していた可能性があるのだ。怖くて見られない。おりしも卒論の時期だが、ググってネットですませる危険はこれで明らかだろう。まして、ウィキペディアなんて許さない。なんて、てめーに言われたくはねぇよと、言われそうだが。
